Digital humanities encompasses both the study of culture using digital methods and the study of digital culture. A pidgin is a fusion of two or more languages that is grammatically simplified but can be understood by native speakers of any of the original languages. For example, many linguists believe that the Occitan language and the Catalan language were formed because a population speaking a single Occitano-Romance language was divided by the political spheres of influence of France and Spain, respectively. Yiddish is a complex blend of Middle High German with Hebrew and also has borrowings from Slavic languages. In these contexts, the situation of the languages is often asymmetrical and one language, the majority language, is dominant while the other(s) have a minority status. Students who speak the minority language at home are also in most cases multilingual because the majority language is widely used and it is necessary to learn it. The theme of this year’s conference, which was held online on July 25-29, was “Responding to Asian Diversity.” The iSchool is pleased to announce that Kahyun Choi joined the faculty as an assistant professor on August 16, 2024. She most recently served as an assistant professor in the Department of Information and Library Science at Indiana University Bloomington. In this online workshop, participants will learn about the typical structures of data-focused APIs, practice using an API to obtain data, and review strategies for working with more difficult or unusual APIs. Chapter 13. Bringing it all Together: Multilingualism in Family, Society and Education

She grew up bilingual in Moldova — a small country nestled between Ukraine and Romania that was formerly a part of the Soviet Union — speaking Romanian at home and Russian in official settings. Being fluent in multiple languages allows you to make connections in these different communities. When you learn a new language, you also learn the culture of the people who speak it. Susanna FIORINI is a translator and consultant in translation technology for research and international organisations. Since 2020, she has been coordinating the Translations and Open Science project, funded by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the French Ministry of Culture, with the aim to explore the possibilities offered by translation technologies to foster multilingualism in scholarly communication. With a PhD in linguistics, she reoriented to natural language processing and currently works with the diffusion and adoption of FAIR principles.
